Pakistan: Top US diplomat escapes gun attack

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Gunmen opened fire on the top U.S. diplomat in northwestern Pakistan early Tuesday as she left for work in her armored vehicle, police and embassy officials said. No one was killed in the attack.

Lynne Tracy, principal officer for the consulate in the bustling city of Peshawar, was 100 yards from her house when two men with AK-47s jumped out of their dark blue Land Cruiser and sprayed her car with dozens of rounds of ammunition.

Her driver reversed the vehicle and peeled back to her home, said Arshad Khan, the local police chief and senior investigator in the case.

The brazen attack came hours after the breakup of Pakistan's ruling coalition government, a fracture that could concentrate more power into the hands of a party that says it is committed to supporting the U.S. war on terror.

The government Monday announced a ban on the Pakistani Taliban — blamed for a wave of suicide bombings in recent days — and hours earlier rejected a cease-fire offer in the Bajur tribal region by the militants.

Khan said Tracy's Land Cruiser was damaged, but only slightly, thanks to its heavy armor.

Though no one was killed by the gunfire, a rickshaw driver was hurt when his three-wheeled taxi was hit by the consulate vehicle, he said. The man was hospitalized, but the extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

Militant activity is rampant in parts of northwest Pakistan, a rumored hiding place of Osama bin Laden, though mainly in tribal regions where U.S. officials say insurgents have found safe havens in which to plan attacks on American and NATO forces across the border in Afghanistan.

Peshawar, a crowded, dusty city, has not been immune, and concerns about militant activity in and around it prompted the government to stage a paramilitary offensive in neighboring Khyber tribal region earlier this year.

Talat Masood, a political and military analyst, said American and other diplomats seen as allies in the war on terror, could increasingly be the targets of militant attacks, especially in the next few weeks.

"I think they have to be very careful" he said, noting the army was intensifying its campaign in tribal regions along the Afghan border. "They should take a low profile, their movements should be restricted during this period."

Masood did not think Western allies should scale back their presence, however, saying that would only embolden the militants and demoralize Pakistanis.

There have been a string of suicide bombings since Pervez Musharraf resigned as president after nearly nine divisive years in power just over a week ago.

The Taliban claimed to be behind a twin suicide bombing at a weapons manufacturing complex near the federal capital, Islamabad, that killed 67 people — one of the largest terrorist attacks ever in the country.

There have been at least three bloody attacks since then. The Taliban spokesman could not immediately be reached to comment on Tuesday's attack.

Pakistan, where anti-American sentiment runs deep, is considered a hardship posting for U.S. diplomats, with many coming for one-year stints without family.

However, while there are occasional attacks on Western targets, ones directly targeting U.S. officials are still relatively unusual. Top diplomats in particular tend to have high security and are often restricted in what places they are allowed to visit.

Along with its embassy, the U.S. has three consulates in Pakistan — in Peshawar, the eastern city of Lahore and the southern city of Karachi. In 2006, a suicide attacker blew himself up outside the Karachi consulate, killing a U.S. diplomat.

In 2002, five people, including two Americans, were killed when a militant hurled grenades into a Protestant church in Islamabad attended by members of the diplomatic community.

The U.S. Embassy provided few details about Tuesday's attack, saying only that there was a "security incident" involving three consulate employees. It would not name or describe the employees.

"There were no injuries and minimal damage to the vehicle," spokesman Lou Fintor added. "We are coordinating with Pakistani authorities in investigating the incident."

Meanwhile Tuesday, in Pakistan's southwest Baluchistan province, a bomb rigged to a motorcycle parked near the stage of a political rally in the town of Jaaferabad wounded at least 20 people, some critically, police official Nazir Ahmad said.

The attacks come as the country's ruling coalition has crumbled. Just a week before, the two main parties united to drive Musharraf, the stalwart U.S. ally in the war on terror, from the presidency, but their partnership collapsed Monday over disputes about his successor and how to restore judges he had ousted.

The main ruling Pakistan People's Party is expected to cobble together a new coalition now that its key junior partner has quit, avoiding the need for another general election.

The People's Party, long led by slain ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, moved almost immediately to calm U.S. fears that the government is paying too little attention to extremism, banning the Taliban group and demanding they surrender their arms.

Bhutto's widower and political successor, Asif Ali Zardari, has said he will run for president, and is expected to win easily. The party submitted his nomination papers Tuesday.

US to deliver aid to tense Georgian port

TBILISI, Georgia - A spokesman for the U.S. embassy says the American navy will deliver food aid to a Georgian port city where Russian forces have set up checkpoints on the outskirts.U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dallas, second of U.S. vessels on their way to Georgia with humanitarian aid, sails through the Bosphorus in Istanbul, August 24, 2008.

The city, Poti, is one of the most tense areas of Georgia following this month's war with Russia. Although many Russian troops have pulled back under a cease-fire agreement, hundreds remain at checkpoints in so-called "security zones" that Moscow claims for itself.

U.S. embassy spokesman Stephen Guice told The Associated Press that U.S. ship-borne humanitarian aid would be delivered to Poti on Wednesday.

The move could further increase tensions between Russia and the United States, which have hit a post-Cold War high in the wake of the war.

ABC announces new cast of Dancing With the Stars

Lance Bass: Bass, formerly of N*Sync, was one of the early rumors for this season's cast. Bass is going to be appearing, but contrary to previous reports, his dancing partner will not be a man. Instead, he will be paired up with Lacey Schwimmer, who is making her first appearance on the show.

Toni Braxton: The six-time Grammy award winning "Un-break My Heart" singer has been on a medical hiatus for the past six months due to heart problems. She has apparently bounced back and will be paired with season one champion, Alec Mazo, who is making his fourth appearance.

Brooke Burke: The lad mag cover girl and former host of Wild On and Rock Star: Supernova will be competing with Derek Hough, who is performing on DWTS for the third time.

Rocco DiSpirito: Audiences were first introduced to this eccentric chef on his reality show, The Restaurant. While he was ousted from the restaurant on which the show was based, he has gone on to publish cookbooks and make other television appearances. He's getting another show on A&E called Rocco Gets Real, premiering in October. He is paired with the infamous Karina Smirnoff, who is making her fifth appearance.

Maurice Greene: This Olympic runner, dubbed "World's Fastest Man," has two Olympic gold medals, one silver, and one bronze that he won in the 2000 and 2004 games. He also currently holds the Indoor World Record for the 60m, with a time of 6.39 seconds. His partner is two-time DWTS champion, Cheryl Burke. This is her sixth appearance on the show.

Kim Kardashian
:
Most of us first heard about the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star when she appeared in a sex tape with Brandy's brother, Ray-J. Since then, she's appeared in somewhat more legitimate films, including the upcoming Disaster Movie. It was also just reported that she managed to slice her foot open by moving a mirror that was under her desk. This injury required stitches, but is not expected to keep her from competing. Her partner is defending champ Mark Ballas, who is appearing for the third time.

Cloris Leachman: Leachman is 82-years-old and is awesome. a nine-time Emmy award winner, she also won an Oscar for her role in The Last Picture Show. Leachman is paired with Corky Ballas, who is making his DWTS debut.

Cody Linley: As Hannah Montana's Jake Ryan, Linley is well-known to the tween audience. He's also the youngest celebrity to ever compete on DWTS. Luckily, he has a good partner in two-time champ Julianne Hough, who is returning for her fourth season.

Susan Lucci: Even if you don't watch soap operas, you know Lucci, who has played Erica Kane on All My Children since the beginning of time (Seriously. AMC is having its 10,000th episode in November). Lucci won an Emmy for her role in 1999. She is paired with DWTS vet Tony Dovolani, who is making his sixth appearance.

Misty May-Treanor: A beach volleyball player, May-Treanor apparently does not believe in vacations. She is competing on DWTS right after snagging a gold medal in Beijing. Her victory at the Olympic games also marked her 108th win in a row. She is paired with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who is returning for his fifth season.

Ted McGinley: Despite his reputation as a show-killer, it's doubtful that his appearance on DWTS is going to do any harm. He is probably best known for his roles on sitcoms Married: With Children and Hope & Faith. He's paired with newcomer Inna Brayer, so maybe producers aren't taking any chances.

Jeffrey Ross: Known as "The Meanest Man in Comedy," Ross can be seen on the various Comedy Central Roasts. He has also made appearances on Weeds and CSI. His partner is Edyta Sliwinska, the only professional dancer to appear on all seven seasons of DWTS.

Warren Sapp: Ths show loves having its awkward football players compete. A recently-retired Super Bowl champion, Sapp played for both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders. Beginning in October, he will host Showtime's Inside the NFL. His partner is Kym Johnson, who is returning for her fifth season.

Dancing With the Stars premieres on Monday, September 22 in a big ol' live, three-night dancing extravaganza. Producers are switching things up a bit by making the contestants choreograph two dances for the first week. They will perform the first dance on Monday, and only 12 of the 13 teams will perform their second dance on Tuesday. On the Wednesday results show, another team will be eliminated. Jesse McCartney and The Jonas Brothers (insert high-pitched squeal here) will be performing.

In addition to having the oldest and youngest stars on the show this season, this is also the biggest cast they've ever had. Personally, I'm rooting for Leachman to go all the way and I think McGinley is going to be kicked off pretty quickly. But then again, I don't really watch the show, so I could be way off.

Who do you think is going to be the first one kicked off and who's going to win it all?

Kara DioGuardi

Kara DioGuardi

By toughing out difficult personal and professional times, songwriter/producer Kara DioGuardi has reached a point in her career where she accepts jobs based on her creative desires rather than financial needs. Her fierce can-do attitude helped. "I'm the type of person if you say I can't do something, I'm going to go all out and get it done," she states.

Intense focus and belief in self has allowed Kara to write and/or produce songs that have been recorded by artists such as Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, Eden's Crush, Marc Anthony and Jessica Simpson. She also co-wrote Enrique Iglesias's latest hit, "Escape," and scored a number one U.K. and Australian hit with Kylie Minogue's "Spinning Around," as well as a top five U.K. hit with Martine McCutcheon's "I've Got You."

After graduating from Duke University with a degree in Political Science (she was originally recruited for its opera program), Kara landed a job at Billboard in 1993. She worked as assistant to the publisher and editor, then in advertising sales, but her five-year stay was emotionally draining. "My mother was gravely ill, so my routine during my entire time there was everyday get up, go to work, leave work, see mom, go to the studio, get some sleep, then up for work again," she recalls.

Those arduous times laid the groundwork for her approach to music. "When you're trying to be an artist, you're totally about your feelings," the native New Yorker confides. "I always write from melody because that's where the art comes from."

After a brief but spirited fling as a recording artist, Kara dove headfirst into songwriting. She still sings through her work as a track producer and on backgrounds. "My life is completely free," she gleams. "Finally I'm getting noticed for my talent and I'm very happy with where I am."

Ellen Barkin

Career

Barkin became a notable actress in the 1980s. Her break out role was in Barry Levinson's Diner (1982), for which she received favorable reviews. Barkin would later appear in several successful films, including the thrillers Sea of Love, opposite Al Pacino (1989), and The Big Easy (1987), opposite Dennis Quaid.

Barkin also appeared in off-Broadway plays. New York Times critic Frank Rich summarized her performance in the play, Eden Court, saying: "If it were really possible to give the kiss of life to a corpse, the actress Ellen Barkin would be the one to do it. In Eden Court, the moribund play that has brought her to the Promenade Theater, Miss Barkin is tantalizingly alive from her bouncing blond ponytail to the long legs that gyrate wildly and involuntarily every time an Elvis Presley record plays on stage".[5]

Barkin has also done work in made-for-television films like Before Women Had Wings (1997) and The White River Kid (1999). Currently, she voices the start of each Theme Time Radio Hour with host Bob Dylan on XM's "Deep Tracks". In 2005, Barkin set up a film production company with her brother, George, along with her ex-husband and billionaire investor, Ronald Perelman.

[edit] Personal life

Barkin has a brother, George, who was formerly the editor in chief of National Lampoon and High Times. Barkin is the mother of two children, Jack Daniel (born 1989) and Romy Marion (born 1992), from her first marriage to actor Gabriel Byrne. The two separated in 1993 and divorced in 1999, but are still close; Byrne even attended Barkin's 2000 wedding to businessman Ronald Perelman.[6] According to New York Magazine, that marriage ended in a messy divorce in 2006 with Barkin receiving $40 million.[7] Barkin is currently suing Perelman for $3.4 million in investment funds he reportedly promised to invest in their film production company, but has yet to deliver.[8]

Amanda Peet

Amanda Peet (born January 11, 1972) is an American film and television actress.

Career

Peet's first screen performance was a television commercial for Skittles. Her early roles included a guest role on the television series Law & Order. She made her film debut in Animal Room (1995). Peet maintained a steady acting career in relatively obscure indie movies.

Her first major role was as "Jack" in the 1999 WB network series Jack & Jill (which aired for two seasons). She also appeared in the eighth-season finale of Seinfeld ("The Summer of George") as a waitress whom Jerry Seinfeld meets. Her character is notable for seemingly dating two men at once: Jerry and her apparent roommate ("dude"), Lyle. Peet's first role in a widely-released feature film came in 2000, with The Whole Nine Yards, which, together with the cult film Whipped, helped to elevate her status from supporting actress to lead. That same year, she was voted one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People magazine. Peet was also in the movie Saving Silverman with Jack Black and Steve Zahn. She also starred in Something's Gotta Give in 2003, playing Diane Keaton's daughter, and, at one point, Jack Nicholson's girlfriend.

In 2005, Peet appeared in the play This Is How It Goes, filling in for Marisa Tomei at the last minute after six days of rehearsal. In the same year, she also co-starred in the films Syriana alongside Matt Damon and George Clooney, and A Lot Like Love, with Ashton Kutcher. In February 2006, she was performing in Neil Simon's Broadway production of Barefoot in the Park.

Peet was a member of the cast of the television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which premiered on NBC on September 18, 2006. She starred with Matthew Perry, with whom she worked in The Whole Nine Yards and The Whole Ten Yards, and Sarah Paulson, with whom she co-starred in Jack & Jill. In Studio 60, Peet's character Jordan McDeere was the newly-appointed president of the National Broadcasting System (NBS). In 2006, she also starred along with Dermot Mulroney in Griffin and Phoenix, where she played a terminally-ill woman living life to the fullest.

In 2007's The Ex, a comedy co-starring Zach Braff, Peet played an attorney who stays home to raise a new baby. In 2008, Peet went on to play an FBI agent in The X-Files: I Want to Believe.[6] In 2008 she was hired by the American Academy of Pediatrics to be an advocate for the Every Child by Two vaccination campaign.

Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi will sit alongside Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson when the eighth season of "American Idol" premieres in January, the Fox network said Monday.

"For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges' table," said Mike Darnell, president, alternative programming of Fox, in a statement.

"With Kara by her side, Paula has some backup and now there is going to be a lot more `girl power' on the show," Darnell said.

DioGuardio's songs have been recorded by Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Pink, among others.

"We are turning the heat up on `Idol' this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges' table," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller in a statement. "She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America's most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show."

Executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said a fourth judge isn't a new idea.

"We had originally intended for `American Idol' to have four judges," she said. "We've seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers."

Best Colleges 2009

Harvard tops this year's list of America's Best Colleges from U.S. News & World Report. It's the first time since 1996 that the Cambridge, Mass., university is alone at the top of the National Universities category. Princeton and Yale come in second and third, respectively, while Amherst College and Williams College share the No. 1 spot on the Liberal Arts Colleges list.

Harvard University

This year, Harvard managed to beat perennial No. 1 Princeton by one 10th of a point in the reputation survey the magazine sends out to college administrators across the country, in addition to making slight improvements in some of the other statistical measures. Harvard, which has a nearly $35 billion endowment, made big news last December when it announced that it would increase the financial packages it offers to students from families that earn $180,000 or less. The move was a dramatic leap beyond the $60,000 threshold that other highly selective universities had been using to determine which students were eligible for the most generous assistance packages. In another PR boost for the nation's oldest university, last school year was also Harvard's first under the guidance of President Drew Gilpin Faust. Her predecessor, Lawrence Summers, left after making controversial remarks about women in the science disciplines.

The reputation survey that U.S. News sends to top college officials at each school counts for 25 percent of a college's ranking. The other 75 percent is based on quantitative data that assesses a college's performance in areas such as graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, financial resources, student selectivity, and alumni giving. Each year, the formula is reassessed to stay on top of recent developments in higher education. For example, just as Harvard and dozens of other colleges recently have made adjustments to become more accessible to families of lesser financial means, U.S. News has incorporated data about the proportion of low-income students a school enrolls into its ranking measurements.

These periodic methodology adjustments make flat year-to-year comparisons of a school's U.S. News ranking somewhat misleading. Nevertheless, alumni always tend to take note of which schools have gained an edge on their academic rivals. For example, in the National Universities list this year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished in fourth place, besting its West Coast rival, the California Institute of Technology, which landed in sixth place. Last year, Caltech held the edge with a fifth place ranking while MIT placed seventh. Part of the difference: MIT improved its faculty resources statistics slightly, while Caltech dipped there a little. (As in Olympic swimming, slightly better performance makes a big difference in results at this level of rankings.)

Over on the Liberal Arts Colleges list, this year the United States Military Academy was ranked 14th, besting its rival, the United States Naval Academy, which held the 22nd slot. Last year, Navy had the edge, finishing 20th while Army was 22nd.
